Supporting Individuals With Intellectual And/or Developmental Disabilities In Trauma RecoveryIndividuals with Intellectual and/or Developmental Disabilities (I/DD) are likely to experience some form of trauma in the course of the lifespan. This makes it important for support providers to be aware of past traumatic experiences, recognize how this may contribute to challenging behavior, and know what they can do to promote recovery. This training will explore what are considered traumatic experiences and why individuals with I/DD are more at risk. Additionally, the connection between trauma and its impact on an individual’s biology and behavior will be discussed. Participants will learn the necessary ingredients to support adaptive coping and recovery from trauma. In order to provide trauma sensitive supports effectively, support providers need to be aware of their own internal states and remain calm. The training will also introduce methods that support providers can use to enhance their own self-awareness and self-regulation skills.
Note: This training currently is ONLY open to employees of New Jersey DDD and DCF, DDD/Medicaid Approved Providers, DCF Providers, and individuals with disabilities and family members.
To meet the training needs of the entire state, there is a limit of participants per agency for this course.
