Adapting Psychotherapy For Individuals With Intellectual And Developmental DisabilitiesResearch shows heavy utilization of pharmacology in the treatment of individuals with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities (IDD), however, the service community recognizes three major approaches to therapeutic intervention: pharmacology, behavioral intervention, and psychotherapy. While psychotherapy is acknowledged as a treatment intervention, it is implemented much less often than the use of medication or behavioral intervention. This training will review strategies to address barriers that have hindered more frequent and effective use of psychotherapy for people with IDD. These strategies will introduce participants to a variety of approaches that include providing special supports, adapting methods to more effectively meet the needs of individuals, and integrating the three recognized approaches to therapeutic intervention.
Note: Note: This training currently is ONLY open to employees of New Jersey DDD, DDD/Medicaid Approved Providers, and individuals with disabilities and family members.
To meet the training needs of the entire state, there is a limit of participants per agency for this course.
