Positive Psychology And Mental Wellness For Individuals With IDD: Have We Been Missing Something?

The importance of understanding Dual Diagnosis (co-occurring developmental disability and mental illness) to better support the needs of individuals with Intellectual/Developmental Disabilities who engage in challenging behavior has received more attention in recent years. This important advancement has facilitated the discussion about new strategies and perspectives on treatment and support strategies. Promising practices in this area must be implemented in order for individuals with disabilities to achieve their full potential. Use of a Positive Psychology approach to providing support can help this to be realized.

 

This presentation will focus on insights gained from the field of Positive Psychology – a discipline of study that emerged in the early 2000s. The training will focus on strategies to support health and wellbeing in order to maximize each person’s opportunities to reach their full potential. Discussion will include shifting toward a genuine mental health perspective with a focus on wellness and how we can support this in meaningful ways.

To meet the training needs of the entire state, there is a limit of participants per agency for this course.
