Adapting Psychotherapy for Individuals with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities

Research shows heavy utilization of pharmacology in the treatment of individuals with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities (IDD), however, the service community recognizes three major approaches to therapeutic intervention: pharmacology, behavioral intervention, and psychotherapy.  While psychotherapy is acknowledged as a treatment intervention, it is implemented much less often than the use of medication or behavioral intervention. This training will review strategies to address barriers that have hindered more frequent and effective use of psychotherapy for people with IDD.  These strategies will introduce participants to a variety of approaches that include providing special supports, adapting methods to more effectively meet the needs of individuals, and integrating the three recognized approaches to therapeutic intervention.

Estimates of co-occurring Anxiety Disorders among individuals with Autism range from 15% to 80%. Factors that make this diagnosis difficult and strategies to adapt behavioral supports and treatment to address this co-occurrence will be discussed. This presentation will discuss the importance of looking for signs of anxiety in individuals with ASD, advocating for clinical assessment of these concerns, and looking for ways to adapt daily support planning and behavioral planning in light of the concerns about a potential anxiety disorder. A model for integrating diagnosis and treatment of an anxiety disorder with a Functional Behavior Assessment and Proactive Behavior Support Plan will be presented. Additional strategies for adapting relaxation activities for individuals with ASD and other intellectual and/or developmental disabilities will be discussed.

Replacing Problem Behavior: The Key to Long Term Change

One of the keys to Positive Behavior Supports and Person Centered behavior planning is the focus on proactive interventions.  This typically involves a variety of strategies, that may include: additional support, prompting desired behavior, environmental accommodations, and avoiding triggers.  While research shows this can be effective in to reducing the frequency and/or severity of challenging behaviors, it is often difficult to sustain these interventions.  Over-reliance on these strategies often results in regression to more frequent or severe behaviors.  This training will focus on the importance of teaching alternative behaviors and developing new skills to replace problem behavior, as a more effective long-term strategy. The importance of basing these skills on function of the behavior will be discussed, along with behavioral teaching strategies.

Community-Based Instruction Community Of Practice Events

Community of Practice (VCoP) is a group of individuals who share a concern or passion for something they do and learn how to do it better as they interact regularly. The CBI VCoP sessions provide opportunities for practitioners to share resources, experiences, stories, tools, classroom lessons, and problem-solving strategies. The VCoP is intended for educators, administrators, job coaches, support staff and other school staff interested in collaborating, connecting, and sharing information on CBI practices.

Virtual Community of Practice (VCoP) Session 2: Educating Together: How Schools and Law Enforcement Can Collaborate to Support Individuals with Special Needs

Join us for a virtual Community of Practice highlighting how one school district has successfully partnered with local police departments to create safer, more inclusive communities for individuals with special needs. During this session, participants will learn about strategies for engaging law enforcement as allies in supporting students and families, and learn how the district developed professional learning opportunities to help officers better understand disabilities, communication differences, and effective interventions. Through this collaborative approach, schools and police have built shared language, trust, and proactive systems that promote positive interactions and reduce crisis responses. Participants will walk away with practical examples and ideas for replicating similar partnerships in their own communities.

Foundations Of Community-Based Instruction Series For New School Personnel

Schools frequently encounter challenges that may jeopardize the quality of CBI implementation over time including staff turnover, staff reassignments, or increased staffing needs. Schools and districts are more likely to sustain CBI practices if there are available trained personnel to continue utilizing the practice. To address this need, the Foundations of CBI Training Series for New Personnel, is offered annually to support new school personnel from previously established CBI teams to support maintenance and sustainability of existing CBI practices and programming.

An individual will not be considered to have been fully trained in the Foundations of CBI until after the successful completion of ALL four days.

Foundations of CBI Day 1: Understanding the Fundamentals of CBI

Prior to planning and implementing CBI programming, it must be understood that CBI is an evidence-based instructional strategy that promotes positive post-school outcomes when implemented with fidelity. CBI utilizes the local community and surrounding areas for students to learn real world skills in natural environments that may be used currently or in the future as students transition to adulthood. As a result of this training, participants will gain a deeper knowledge of the principles of CBI and how these principles translate toward promoting equity, agency, and community inclusion for individuals with disabilities.

Note: This series is ONLY open to individual school staff who are new to CBI practices and are employed in a district that has been previously trained and has an established CBI implementation team.

The series consists of four parts, and you must register for and attend each session in order.

Foundations of CBI Day 2: Transforming Post-School Outcomes Using Quality Planning

Participation in community opportunities is vital for the development and growth of personal relationships, friendships, and connections to other areas of adult life, including employment, higher education, and independent living. When students with disabilities receive systematic, authentic, and engaging community-based instruction across all 4 domains (community living, recreation and leisure, career awareness, and career exploration) they are more likely to experience increased access to community-based, integrated activities which not only promote positive post-school outcomes but also quality of life. During this session, participants will learn more about the 4 domains of CBI and understand how to utilize strategic planning, ecological inventories, and stakeholder feedback to prioritize meaningful learning experiences that are relevant to students within their communities.

Note: This series is ONLY open to individual school staff who are new to CBI practices and are employed in a district that has been previously trained and has an established CBI implementation team.

Foundations of CBI Day 3: Best Practices in CBI Implementation Across Domains

Participants will learn to incorporate CBI into their instructional routine as a complement to the in-school instruction provided. In-school instruction alone is often insufficient for teaching students with disabilities who need additional opportunities to practice and apply skills in meaningful experiences. Functional skills reliant on the application of academic knowledge and social skills are best taught through systematic instruction in naturally occurring community environments (traditional or virtual) that provide students with authentic and rewarding learning opportunities. This training includes strategies and techniques for using systematic instruction in the classroom and community, as well as prompting systems, data collection strategies, incorporating technology, reinforcement considerations, and planning for maintenance and generalization.

Foundations of CBI Day 4: Supporting and Sustaining Leadership and Logistics

Due to the unique management and logistical challenges related to implementing CBI, schools may struggle when establishing or planning substantial growth of this practice. During this session, participants will learn about major programming areas including stakeholder involvement, budgets, policies and procedures, master planning including the training and coordination of personnel, selecting activities and locations, curriculum development, and the use of systematic instruction to ensure CBI is consistently implemented with quality. Participants will have the opportunities to assess their school/district’s current CBI practices and determine how they will contribute to existing CBI Action Plans.

Supported Employment Leadership Institute

Employees often become supervisors because the success and leadership potential they displayed in a previous role resulted in a promotion. However, being an effective supervisor does not come automatically with the new job title. Rather, one must intentionally develop a set of skills in areas such as leadership, vision, recruitment, and organization.

Note: Our Supported Employment Leadership Institute is a 2-day, in-person, interactive course designed specifically for supported employment managers and supervisors. During this course, participants will dive into solution-focused, evidence-based strategies to address challenges unique to supported employment managers.

Topics will include:
    • The hallmarks of effective supervisors
    • Exploring the challenges of hiring and maintaining qualified job coaches
    • Strategies for supervising remote workers

Employment Specialist Foundations: Basic Knowledge And Skills

Employment Specialist Foundations: Basic Knowledge and Skills is the recently redesigned certification series for New Jersey employment specialists/job coaches. It is a regularly updated four-day series of interactive, competency-based workshops designed for beginning Employment Specialists working for a DVRS Supported Employment Vendor and/or DDD Community Service Provider offering Supported Employment Services. The content would also be beneficial to school job coaches and transition coordinators. Participants will learn best-practice, evidence-based approaches to all phases of supported employment services (assessment and discovery, job development, job coaching, and follow along for job retention). The course is designed to prepare otherwise qualified staff for The Certified Employment Support Professional (CESP) exam by providing an overview of the five core areas identified as crucial for ability to work as a supported employment specialist.

While staff will benefit most by participating in the four training days sequentially, the series is designed so that each day’s content exists as a distinct, stand-alone learning experience. For each day, participants will receive a certificate of completion. An individual will not be considered to have met the DDD/DVRS vendor requirements for competency in supported employment services until after the successful completion of all four days. It will be the responsibility of the agency to ensure staff meets the four-day participation requirements.

Employment Specialist Supplemental

Employment Specialist Supplemental: Culture and Connection in Supported Employment

Culture is always part of working with people with intellectual and developmental disabilities and their families. It shapes how disability is understood, how decisions are made, and what support looks like in daily life. In supported employment, these cultural influences also affect job matches, communication with families, and relationships with employers. This workshop offers job coaches the opportunity to reflect on how culture shapes employment partnerships and to practice skills that build trust, respect, and authentic collaboration. By paying attention to both their own perspectives and those of the people they support, coaches can strengthen relationships and create employment opportunities that truly align with what matters most to job seekers.

Participants will leave the session with examples of a wide variety of assistive technology and software recommendations for use on the job site as well as a greater understanding of how to appropriately assess and match assistive technology to the need.

Employment Specialist Supplemental: Lines Not to Cross - Preventing and Responding to Workplace Sexual Harassment for Employees with I/DD

Supporting individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities as they navigate social expectations in the workplace is always a challenge, but when issues of sexual harassment arise, the stakes are even higher. Too often, we see qualified supported workers lose their jobs not because of a lack of job skills, but because of social or sexual missteps that cross the line into harassment. At the same time, individuals with I/DD may be at a higher risk of being targeted for sexual harassment due to power imbalances, socialized compliance, difficulty recognizing or responding to manipulative behaviors, or fear of job loss if they report concerns. Workplace relationships can be complex, and supported workers often look to job coaches to help them navigate these challenges effectively. Participants will leave with tools to appropriately respond to such situations while simultaneously supporting healthy sexuality for the people we serve.

Holding The Compass: A Family Guide To The Transition Years

When your child with a disability approaches adulthood, your role as a parent or guardian shifts in new and sometimes unexpected ways. This six-part series is built to support families through the transition years with encouragement, actionable steps, and fresh ways to imagine what’s next. Sessions will help parents and guardians understand the adult service system in New Jersey, explore inclusive college options, balance advocacy with fostering independence, navigate SSI/Medicaid while supporting employment, and make informed choices about guardianship and alternatives. Just as importantly, you’ll learn how to prepare yourself emotionally and practically for the changes these years bring. Whether you’re just beginning to think about transition or already in the thick of it, this series will give you strategies and reassurance to move forward with confidence.

Please see below for detailed information on each of the topics. Please join us for one or all of this series!

Holding the Compass 4: Step In or Step Back? - The Evolving Dynamics of School Partnerships

Parent advocacy can open doors, remove obstacles, and ensure that your child’s needs are truly seen. But for many families, advocacy feels like a battle, and during the transition years, it’s completely normal to question whether it’s time to step in or step back. Further, there is often not consensus between you, your child, and their school team about what your role should be in any given transition decision or task. In this session, we’ll explore the challenges of parent advocacy during the transition years and how to stay involved in ways that support your child’s growth, honor their emerging independence, and keep your relationship with the school team collaborative and grounded in trust.

Support Coordination

Support Coordination Orientation

Support Coordination Orientation: Person-Centered Planning & Connection to Community Supports

Support Coordinators play an important role in the lives of people with developmental disabilities and their families. They are professionals that help to identify the supports the person needs, plan for the life the person wants, and connect the person to services that will help him/her achieve a quality life in the community. In order to do this support coordinators need to have a working knowledge of the disability system and current models of support, be skilled in person-centered planning, be able to identify a wide array of available community services options, and effectively monitor the quality and effectiveness of supports on an ongoing basis.

As a part of the required support coordination orientation, this two-day training will introduce participants to current disability philosophy, best practices, and the roles of a support coordinator. Through a series of engaging activities participants will learn how to develop the person centered planning tool and NJ Individual Service Plan. Strategies to develop personally defined outcomes and goals will be practiced, and concepts related to connecting the person to community-based supports and services will be presented.

Support Coordination Workshops

Basic Overview of Self-Directed Services and Supports Brokerage

In New Jersey, people can self-direct some or all of their Home and Community Based Services, made available through the Division of Developmental Disabilities (DDD) Supports Program or Community Care Program.  Self-directed services are provided by a self-directed employee or a service provided by a non-disability specific business and are paid through use of a fiscal intermediary.  People that self-direct their services can hire a supports broker to help find, sustain, and plan for their self-directed services. This workshop will provide a basic overview of self-directed services and the role of supports brokers.

Note: This training currently is open to those interested in learning more about self-directed services in New Jersey.  Target audiences include people with disabilities, families, support coordinators and those in similar roles.

This training does not fulfill the training requirement to be a Supports Broker
